CITY DESCRIPTION: Located on a broad, fertile plain 1,000 feet above sea level, Chiang Mai enjoys a pleasant tropical climate most of the year. The largest city in northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is both a historic traditional city and a modern urban center. A hub of political and commercial activity, as well as a center of Theravada Buddhist learning, Chiang Mai provides a lively atmosphere rich in culture and traditional arts.
FACULTY FROM: Chiang Mai University PRE-SESSION: Students must attend an intensive 8 week summer session of in-depth orientation and Thai language, offered in Madison. REQUIRED COURSES: Thai language and/or literature. During the first semester, beginning Thai students continue study of Thai language. More advanced Thai students take individual tutorials on topics in language and/or literature of interest to them. During the second semester, year students take tutorial courses in language and/or literature. (6 cr.) Fall semester only students will take Thai language plus 3 subject tutorials.
Those enrolled in the full-year program take one tutorial per semester. Topics covered depend on the interests of the student and the availability of appropriate CMU faculty. Areas typically include: agriculture, anthropology, archaeology, art history, economics, education, geography, history, languages and linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, etc.
Lastly, students in the full-year program complete a fieldwork project, a two-semester independent study project (12 cr.) conducted by the student under supervision of an appropriate CMU professor. Selection of a topic begins while in Madison for the summer and is completed after arrival in Chiang Mai. The first month of work in Chiang Mai includes an introduction to fieldwork methodology, and short trips to some potential fieldwork sites.
