Program Description

The UW-Madison exchange program in Singapore allows students the opportunity to directly enroll in courses at the National University of Singapore, one of Asia's premier universities. This program is ideal for students from diverse academic backgrounds interested in taking courses in English in a dynamic and multiethnic campus environment.

Singapore is a part of the Asia Pacific, a vibrant and colorful region that is fast becoming a leader in the new millennium. Located at one of the crossroads of the world, Singapore's strategic position has helped it grow into a major center for trade, communications and tourism. Originally a British colony, Singapore is home to a diverse population of Chinese, Malays, Indians, and Eurasians, and others who have chosen to make Singapore their home. The country’s four official languages include Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, and English, with English as the most common language of business and everyday life. Singapore's Asian influences along with its location in the heart of Southeast Asia make Singapore the perfect place to experience the various cultures of Asia while in an English-friendly environment.

Academics

Founded in 1905, the National University of Singapore is the country's premier university and boasts a highly qualified international faculty. The university has high standards of teaching and research that have contributed to its high-ranking scores among the top universities of Asia. The National University of Singapore offers a comprehensive range of disciplines ranging from architecture to medicine to music, with a student body of over 32,000 from 88 countries contributing to a vibrant and thriving campus life.

Students on the program take courses with Singaporean and international students in a variety of fields at the National University of Singapore, including arts and social sciences, computer science, architecture, building and real estate, engineering, law and science. All courses, expect those in foreign language departments, are taught in English.

Housing

Students at the National University of Singapore may choose to stay in a residence hall or university housing (on or off campus). Rooms are single or double occupancy and furnished with the basic necessities such as beds, mattresses, wardrobes, study tables, book shelves and fans. On-campus accommodations are within walking distance to most campus faculties, libraries, sports facilities and administrative offices, and a free campus shuttle bus service plies the entire campus daily. Students in residence halls purchase a hall meal plan while those in university housing prepare meals in shared kitchen facilities or eat at campus and local restaurants.

Excursions and Activities

Upon arrival in Singapore, students participate in a week-long orientation session at the National University of Singapore to help adjust to life in Singapore and become familiar with the academic culture. In addition to orientation, the university's International Relations Office and Office of Student Affairs provide support to non-graduating (exchange) students during their study.

Students have access to campus sports facilities, as well as organized sports activities. Students can also enjoy the numerous activities and explore the different cultural areas that constitute the character of Singapore like the annual Singapore International Dragon Boat Festival or celebrating the Chinese New Year.
