Program Description

The TransAtlantic Science Student Exchange Program (TASSEP) is a consortium of universities from the European Union and the United States (which includes the UW-Madison) that has designed an academic year exchange program specifically for undergraduate science majors. As scientific activities, both in private industry as well as university and government laboratories, become increasingly international in scope, it is essential that science students become familiar with foreign cultures, languages, and economic systems. This program allows students to study their chosen science discipline at one of twenty European universities. The university options are located around Europe and countries include Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland

A key feature with TASSEP is the strong involvement of science faculty at UW-Madison and the European universities. The science faculty work to ensure that students are properly advised about foreign university selection and foreign course selection. Academics

Students directly enroll in the European university and take classes with local students. Course enrollment is decided by prior agreement between the student, his or her advisor, and the foreign university representative or coordinator. Communication between the two universities ensures that selected courses will be available. Participants can choose to spend all of their time taking regular university courses or work on research nearly full time.

If attending a non-English speaking European university, students must have at least four semesters of university-level coursework in that language. Exceptions to the minimum language requirements may be made in consultation with the foreign university advisor. Most of the non-English universities offer intensive language programs during a one or two month period prior to the start of the academic year.

The following European universities participate in TASSEP:
Austria- Technische Universität Wien in Vienna
Belgium- Université de Liège in Liège
Denmark- Aarhus Universitet in Aarhus
France- Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble; Université Paul Sabatier in Toulouse; University of Paris XI in Orsay; and Ecole Superieure de Chimie Physique Electronique de Lyon in Lyon
Germany- Friedrich-Schiller Universität in Jena; Technische Univeristät in Berlin
Irelend- Trinity College in Dublin
Italy- Università di Bologna in Bologna; Università di Pavia in Pavia
Scotland - University of Strathclyde in Glasgow
Spain- Universidad de Pais Vasco in Bilbao; Universidad Complutense in Madrid; Universidad de Santiago de Compostela in Santiago de Compostela
Sweden- Lund University in Lund
Switzerland- Eidgenossiche Technische Hochschule in Zurich

Housing

Housing arrangements vary depending on the European university. Some students live in university residence halls, while others live in apartments. Participants receive information on housing directly from the foreign university.

Excursions and Activities

Excursions and activities will vary from university to university, but students are encouraged to join student groups and sports teams to become involved on-campus. At some universities, the international student services office on-campus may plan activities and events for international students.
