Most Memorable Experience

I volunteered at a nursing home in Aix, and meeting my 98-year-old friend Ferdinand was easily one of the best things I did.

Message from the Director of IAP

Dear Parents,

Greetings from International Academic Programs (IAP)! If you are reading this page, your student is thinking about, or has already decided to, study abroad. We are delighted for this consideration and stress the tremendous transformative impact, in terms of personal, academic, and professional development, of a study abroad experience.

Study abroad (for-academic-credit educational experiences that take place outside of the U.S) is truly an integral part of the UW student experience and better prepares students for our increasingly globalized world. It is the mission of our office to break down the barriers, financial and otherwise, to make study abroad accessible to as many students as possible.

With over 200 programs to choose from in over 60 countries, from week-long to year-long, from internships to classroom-based to field research, from immersion in a foreign language to English-based, from Computer Science to History to Engineering, from faculty-led to direct enroll in a foreign institution, from homestay to student dorms, from London to Hong Kong to Africa, there is a program that meets your students needs!

IAP strives to provide each student with the support, guidance, advice, knowledge, and tools to select, apply to, and safely and successfully participate on a study abroad program as part of their academic career at UW-Madison. While it can be a new and daunting task, IAP expects students to take responsibility for navigating this process, as it further develops the maturity, independence, self-confidence, and self-sufficiency that students learn while abroad. As such, IAP communicates directly with the student regarding all aspects of their study abroad experience and encourages you to help support them to do so as well.

To assist in that, IAP has developed the following website and resources for parents to help you understand the various aspects of the study abroad process and to answer questions you may have.

We thank you for your support and are dedicated to making your student's study abroad one of the most meaningful and impactful experiences of their life.

Sincerely,
Daniel K Gold
