Program Duration
Three weeks in Mid-May to Early-June
Program Description
This UW-Madison three week field experience in Mexico will provide students the opportunity to participate in the provision of community health services in a rural clinic and community hospital in Mexico. This course will facilitate the development of cultural competence by introducing students to life, culture and traditions of healing and healthcare in Mexico. Students will provide care to a diverse, Spanish-speaking population, and will develop and present community education projects. The course will help students to integrate principles of individual, family, and population-centered nursing, epidemiology, environmental health, and health promotion, disease prevention, and disease management.
Students will participate in topic areas taught by a local Mexican specialist for the first few days of the program. The topics will involve the traditions of indigenous Mexican healers and include a sweat lodge, cooking course, and the use of herbs. Students will participate in a home stay with a hospital nurse and will spend each day following the introductory program at the hospital. Care provided by the hospital is funded by the Mexican National Health Care System, and by direct payment from patients and their families. The hospital serves a diverse population; most are poor. Nursing staff participate in the provision of a variety of community health programs and inpatient services. Participants will also partake in community health education programs and services in the surrounding communities and villages.
