The Arabic Language Program in Alexandria co-sponsored by the Institute for Study Abroad at Butler University (IFSA-Butler) and UW-Madison, allows students to study Arabic in one of Egypt's most prestigious universities. Courses are principally Arabic language studies, with both a regular and intensive course option available for students at all levels.
This program is geared towards students of all Arabic language levels who would like to improve both their Modern Standard and Colloquial Arabic skills and who have an interest in Islamic History and Culture. Students on this program will take their Arabic language courses at the Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language Center, which is housed within the Faculty of Arts at Alexandria University.

Alexandria is a living showcase for Egypt's glorious history, once the capital of Egypt and home to ancient Greek, Jewish and Armenian communities. Getting to Your Program
There is a mandatory group flight arranged through IFSA-Butler for travel from the U.S. to Alexandria.
Visa
Both a tourist visa and a student visa are required. U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program. IFSA-Butler will provide you with visa information.
Orientation
IAP expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on an IAP program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
IFSA-Butler conducts a comprehensive on-site orientation upon arrival at the study abroad site.
Housing
Students will live in shared apartments with other IFSA-Butler students. Apartments are fully furnished and include kitchens and students will be able to prepare their own meals.
Excursions and Activities
Students organize a variety of social, athletic and intellectual programs through housing and provide an excellent way to integrate with other international and Egyptian students.
Alexandria is a vibrant city of art and culture. It comes alive as it hosts popular theatrical and musical performances, an International Film Festival, a Mediterranean Modern Art Biennial, numerous cultural centers, and a UNESCO-supervised version of the ancient Alexandria Library. Alexandria is also known as Egypt's gateway to the west which makes traveling to other parts of Egypt and to other countries quite easy. It is one of the Mediterranean's major summer resorts, whose coast stretches over 30 miles. It is a vibrant place to live in, with parks, beaches, entertainment, shopping venues, cultural events and Graeco-Roman and Arab monuments.
Insurance
IFSA-Butler offers mandatory international health insurance for education abroad opportunities provided through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). Students on IFSA-Butler sponsored programs are covered by this policy. The cost of this insurance is included in the program fee. IFSA-Butler will send you instructions on how to access your policy and insurance card.

The Arabic Language Program through Alexandria University is a semester long and provides students with two track options. All classes are offered through the Alexandria University Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) program. At the TAFL Center, students will take their Arabic language courses with other international students from around the world.
The regular track includes four courses: Modern Standard Arabic, Colloquial Egyptian Arabic, Islamic History and Culture, and an elective. Currently the elective options are Politics and Social Media or Egyptology.
The intensive track allows student to complete 8 credits of Modern Standard Arabic, Colloquial Egyptian Arabic and Islamic History and Culture.
The Alexandria University campus is located next to the Mediterranean Sea and is home to approximately 170,000 students. The TAFL Center at Alexandria University was established in 1985 to teach Arabic to international students from around the world.
