Are you ready to engage in research for you disseratation abroard? IAP can assist. You can apply to this Worldwide Dissertator program if you wish to be registered at UW and receive for dissertator credit for the time you are abroad.
You have the flexibility to determine where you conduct your research and for how long. IAP will provide assistance through course and insurance registration. IAP will also assist with emergencies abroad.
Please note, if you are receiving Fulbright-Hays or an International Institute fellowship, you should apply for the appropriate IAP program for support.
You will select your location. If the country has a State Department warning, you will be directed to submit additional documents at time of application for the University International Travel Committee (UITC) to review. IAP cannot facilitate research in a country with a warning without UITC approval.
Past students have completed research in Turkey, Korea, Uganda, Guatemala, India, and the Philippines.
Getting to Your Program
You are responsible for arranging your own travel to your research site.
You are responsible for obtaining their own visas for the time they are abroad. If you need letters confirming your student status, please consult your IAP Study Abroad Advisor.
HousingYou are responsible for arranging your own housing in addition to identifying an emergency contact in country. IAP will verify your contact upon acceptance.
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
You will provide IAP with an in-country contact that can assist in emergency situations abroad.

How to Apply
First complete the IAP Online Application. The following supplemental application materials will become available to you through the application portal:

Forms are subject to change. Complete the forms according to the checklist provided to you in the online application portal.
After the Deadline
IAP will review your application and make the final admissions decision. You will be notified of the admissions decision via email.
IAP will enroll you in a study abroad placeholder course while abroad keeping you enrolled as a Madison student. You do not need to register for a course while abroad. You will indicate the course you will receive credit for (usually this is dissertator research in your department) and indicate the advisor evaluating your work when you apply. IAP will work with your faculty advisor to confirm your final grade at the end of your time abroad.
