Have you always wanted to study abroad but keep telling yourself you don’t have the time? Then consider studying abroad this summer! During the summer, there are multiple study abroad programs that range from two weeks up to twelve weeks.
Studying abroad during the summer will allow you to:
- Stay on track! Studying abroad for a summer program allows you to keep on track with the courses that you need to take during the semester. With careful planning you can earn anywhere from 2-12 credits while abroad this summer to help move you forward in your degree. Do you have to take a class here at UW or keep a summer job? Then select one of our early summer programs that return in early June, right before summer classes at UW begin, allowing you to have the best of both experiences.
- Build your resume! Are you looking for that unique experience to add to your resume, making you more competitive in the job market? Studying abroad and/or completing an internship abroad can offer equal if not more experience than a typical summer job in the US. Not only will you earn credit, but you will also gain valuable, hands-on experience.
"Students participating in summer study abroad programs (whether an internship, intensive language study, or short-term faculty led program) will definitely acquire the multicultural sensitivity, multilingual abilities, and international/global competencies that will make them most qualified for jobs and internships. Employers and organizations that visit UW-Madison expect students to be proficient in these competencies and also expect students to "think outside the box" and be outside their comfort zone. Summer study abroad programs are definitely the path to follow to fulfill all of these aims, plus more!"-Greg Iaccarino, Career and Internship Advisor
- Do something different! Learn that language you always wanted to, or enroll in a class that you don’t normally have time to take here at UW.
- Study with a UW faculty member! Many of our summer study abroad programs are developed and led by a faculty/staff member from UW Madison. Follow along with them and learn from their expertise in a small group setting.
You can use your financial aid for any summer study abroad program that is four weeks or longer in our office. In addition, there are scholarships available that you can apply for.

“Studying abroad during the summer was the perfect choice for me. My major is really specific, so I knew I probably wouldn’t be able to get credit for it while I was abroad. I had specific classes that I needed to take at the UW every semester, so studying abroad during the summer allowed me to get all of the major credits that I needed while still getting the study abroad experience. I love the UW and didn’t want to miss a whole semester, so studying over the summer ensured that I didn’t miss any time at the UW. Tuition for summer study abroad programs is also generally cheaper than whole semester and year-long study abroad programs, so that was a plus for me as well. I liked the variety of programs that were offered over the summer, too. There are programs in numerous countries that range from just a couple of weeks to the whole summer long and that range in credits from just a few to a whole semester’s worth. Studying abroad over the summer is also a good choice for people who aren’t sure if they could spend a whole semester or a whole year in a foreign country. Choosing to study abroad over the summer was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!”

“Studying abroad has always been a top choice on my to-do-list, but as a junior in college with two majors, I have a very a rigorous academic schedule that does not allow for much time away. Summer study abroad is ideal for me because it allows me to have a study abroad experience without having to worry about missing a semester of school and potentially falling behind in my credits, as well as an extra activity that will expand my perspective for future studies and work. Studying abroad during the summer also gives me more time to explore the country since I am able to take fewer classes than I would have in a full semester.”

"I decided to study abroad during the summer after my freshman year because I thought that it sounded like an amazing way to spend my summer break. I also chose a summer program because I was not sure if studying abroad for a semester would fit into my academic schedule or if it would be too intense for me to be away from home for that long. It was a nice way to get a taste of study abroad, and it helped me figure out that I wanted to go abroad again for a longer period of time. My summer study abroad experience in Greece also helped me decide that I wanted to be a Classical Humanities major, as well as giving me a wonderful opportunity to see a new part of the world. Studying abroad in the summer was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!"
