The UW Microbiology International Internships program is offered by the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) in partnership with IAP.

The UW-Madison Department of Bacteriology, in association with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, offers this International Undergraduate Research Experience for up to seven undergraduate students each summer. Participating undergraduate students will spend ten weeks in a biological sciences research laboratory at the Faculty of Science at Mahidol University or Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand conducting full-time research in microbiology, microbial genetics, and/or molecular biology.

This opportunity will allow selected students to further their research experience by becoming engaged in an active, top-notch research program in a scientific laboratory at Mahidol University or Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Chulalongkorn and Mahidol are the first and second highest ranked universities in Thailand. They both receive some of the largest research budgets throughout Thailand, as well. Participating students will conduct their own research project under the direction of a Thai faculty member and work as part of a laboratory research team investigating fundamental questions in microbiology and molecular biology.

Learning Objectives

We have overall Goals and Expectations for Study Abroad Participants, covering the personal, academic and professional aspects of study abroad. Additionally on this program, you can:
  • Practive basic techniques used by scientists to investigate the fascinating world of microorganisms
  • Identify and understand major representative groups of microorganisms
  • Examine bacteria that are important in antibiotic production, sewage treatment, disease, food manufactoring, etc.
  • Practice scientific processes - developing hypotheses, design experiments, perform experiments, collect data, analyze it critically and report it to others
